Where it comes from

Multi-therapist massage has roots in several traditions, including Hawaiian lomi lomi, in which more than one practitioner sometimes works on a single person. Spa menus adopted four hand treatments widely from the 1990s, and the outcall version follows the same idea in a hotel room.

The technique

Symmetry and timing. The two therapists mirror each other's strokes on opposite sides of the body, or divide the body between upper and lower halves and keep an even rhythm. The coordination is what makes it work: contact never stops anywhere, and the brain gives up trying to follow two sets of hands.

What to expect

Two therapists arrive together and prepare the room as one: towels, oil, a lamp, the heating up. They agree between themselves who starts where, usually one at the shoulders and one at the feet, and then work in a mirrored rhythm that keeps the whole body attended to at once. Each states her limits at the start in her own words. Conversation is optional and often abandoned. The hour ends at the booked time for both of them together.

Who it suits

The regular marking the end of a rotation or a long project. Guests who find a single massage pleasant but not quite enough to switch off. It is not usually a first booking, though nothing prevents it.
